Last night, I returned from the Purpose Guides Institute 9-day intensive. For 9 days, 14 of us dove into 5 soul encounter technologies, developed numerous tools to help ourselves and our clients overcome resistance to living our purpose, and began laying the track to build our businesses as Purpose Guides. When PGI launched last year, I joined PGI as both Faculty (on the Entrepreneurship track) and participant on the Guiding Track. Before I share my experience, however, I'd like to share a bit more about what PGI is, why it is so special and what exactly we were doing in the woods during these 9 days.
Why PGI is Special
PGI is an evolutionary organization that trains people to become Purpose Guides, so that they can transform their communities and clients with the power of purpose. PGI is led by my Purpose Guide, Jonathan Gustin, a man I now regard as mentor, friend and colleague in creating a world on purpose.
The 9-Day Intensive
Having prepared for the intensive with 2 months of training (10 hours a week of live classes, online community discussions, reading 3 books, doing 20+ purpose discovery exercises, and buddy calls), the 13 members of our cohort and Jonathan met in the flesh for the very first time at a beautiful and rustic retreat center in the Mendocino wilderness, called River's Bend.
Each day consisted of 3, 3-hour training blocks, diving into each module of the 10-week Purpose Octagon approach, with two notable exceptions. On day 7, we experienced a 24-hour fast, culminating in an 8-hour self-designed Soul Quest purpose discovery ceremony in isolation and wilderness. I also delivered 3 of the program's 5 Entrepreneurial training modules, taking my fellow PGI Cohort members into the Lean Start-Up Methodology, heart-centered sales and heart-centered market segmenting / niche discovery (the last 2 modules are on Marketing and the Lean Start-up Launch Plan).
We stayed in two large cabins, had 3 delicious, humane and sustainable meals a day, spent 2+ hours a day outside reading, sleeping, doing purpose exercises, meditating and taking solo hikes along the Navarro River and in the abutting Hendy Woods. I woke at 6am each day for meditation, reading and yoga, before our 8am breakfast and first class at 9am.
Many of us stayed up late into the night connecting and diving deep into each other's lives, careers, spiritual practices and dreams for the future. I was not one of these people. I found myself falling fast asleep by 10pm almost every night, completely sated and spent.
My Experience - Embracing Humanity's Wholeness
I won't enumerate the hundreds of insights, meaningful connections, or the subtle and explosive shifts in my own purpose journey. But I will share the big one. I'm embracing humanity's wholeness, standing for the purpose discovery and embodiment of each human and unit of human cooperation. This means standing for ISIS, standing for the American Dream, standing for corporations and all the humans who comprise them, standing for the healing and empowerment of every person who has hurt another, is walking around without this knowledge or behind bars and serving life sentences for unspeakable deeds. This means getting off of my judgment and resting in my own purpose, my commitment to every human, to inspire and guide them into wholeness and the deepest expression of their soul's longing, their life's purpose.
This ain't easy.
I spent the better part of the last decade as a social revolutionary, actively persecuting and calling to account, my family members, especially my Dad, capitalism, the American Dream and all the resource imperialist war, ecocide, torture, exploitation, corruption, violence and injustice that makes it's pursuit possible. I've been moving this direction for some time in my own purpose journey and personal and spiritual development work, beginning with the launch of Planet Purpose in May of 2015. I'm getting off it with America, capitalism, the GOP, my family, my Dad, the Midwest. Two-months ago, I signaled my surrender to this possibility, relinquishing my soul identity as revolutionary, and opening to a deeper expression.
On this intensive, I deepened my commitment in a Fire Ceremony, and during my 8-hour Soul Quest ceremony. In this ceremony, among the wisdom of the trees, I claimed a deeper expression my soul's truth, a name, an image: "Buffalo Heart Who Loves and Wholes the World. This means many things. My book coming out this Spring, "The Purpose Revolution", will not be coming out. Instead it is being rewritten as "Planet on Purpose" speaking into the wholeness of each human, mode of human cooperation and purpose-driven potential waiting to be discovered, embraced and lived.
Thanks for reading. Stay tuned.
