Purpose-Driven Entrepreneurs communicate with vulnerability and strength, or rather, strong boundaries. Sitting in their commitment to their purpose they show up as their full selves, warts and all, emotions and all. They also know what works for them, what does not work for them and how to ask for what they need.
Without exception, Purpose-Driven Entrepreneurs are vulnerable, showing their strength of character and the fullness of their being, by being real and imperfect with everyone in their lives. They realize that their path in business is one in the same as their personal / spiritual / life journey of becoming more courageous, full and truthful over time. In each moment that difficulty arises in business, there is an opportunity to learn, to grow, connect and reflect. And this is also the secret to sales - when another human sees and appreciates our humanity, sees our fragility, our vulnerability, they become connected to us.
More than anything, customers, investors and partners want to know why we care about devoting our lives to what we do, how we are personally connected to our business mission. In common business language, this is the essence of selling, as people choose to do business with people they relate to and feel close to (and maybe love!).
Of course, this isn't business as usual, and perhaps this is the most crucial distinction between social/eco entrepreneurs (those that manage for a triple bottom line - people, planet, profit) and a Purpose-Driven Entrepreneur. This latter group includes all the concerns of the former, AND treats business as a personal spiritual practice, remaining open in each moment, willing to learn, reveal and connect with the world during the course of normal business. Purpose-Driven Entrepreneurs are present to the truth that what makes us vulnerable also makes us beautiful, strong and powerful.
Living and profiting with purpose requires more than intention, but firm, crisp action. To live purposefully, you must remove or repair anything in your life and career that doesn't serve your purpose. This requires that you say "no" as you exercise self-care and set firm boundaries around your purpose. As a Purpose-Driven Entrepreneur, this practice even includes saying "no" to revenue, to customers and investors that are unaligned. When you find and connect with your purpose, you gain the confidence to make these decisions, harnessing your warrior energy to protect what is sacred - your purpose, your ethics, and the greatest good for humanity and our planet.
The benefit of boundaries is that they mark the territory, empowering you to create and innovate within your own ethical framework, to craft a unique business that supports your primary objective - living purposefully. Much as gardeners stake off, weed and protect seedlings, you also need to ensure that your purpose, especially in the early stages of its growth is protected and remains ideologically pure, so that it can grow and reach fullness before meeting the forces of the world.
When you connect with your purpose, it imbues you with a sense of mortality (and immortality), wherein you acknowledge that you have but one life, one purpose to live, and should you die today, you will know you spoke from the heart, set boundaries, are on point, on purpose, aligned and in integrity with you we are.
"You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life." - Winston Churchill
There is no "if-then" on the path of the Purpose-Driven Entrepreneurs, no serving foreign goals that are counter to your purpose, or serving people who promise that purpose and integrity are just around the corner once you do "x". With this awareness, you are empowered to live everyday as if it is your last, treating each person with respect and kindness, while speaking your truth and holding firm boundaries around your hard-won and sacred relationship to purpose.
