“What is the essence of life? To serve others and do good.”

Video #1: Teaching
Video #2: Exercise
Please complete your Morning Purpose Ritual and re-write your Purpose Statement.
The final exercise of this first module focuses on seeking input from your family, friends, colleagues, and community. It’s important that you generate an awareness of who you are from within yourself as you have over the last 2 days. It’s just as important to allow people who know you well to offer their reflections, as they often see elements of your Being and Talents that you might be missing.
Each relationship and context (social, work, creative, spiritual) will continue to reveal new information about your purpose to elevate and deepen your purpose throughout your life. All of this input orients you to be on the lookout for new clues to your purpose in the world.
Before we begin, we need to mention a special kind of resistance, The Image Consultant. The Image Consultant wants you to look good. She/he wants everyone to think you've got it all figured out. (You don't, none of us do!). The Image Consultant is convinced you don't need anyone's help, that everything is great as it is. Just like with the Critic, it's important to welcome the Image Consultant, listen to it, thank it, and then move into action.
Being and Talents Exercise
Choose ten people who know you well. Think of a couple of people from each context of your life (e.g. grade school, high-school, old room-mates, ex-romantic partners, co-workers, current friends, family members, etc.). The reasoning is that the greater the diversity of these people’s perspectives, the richer the data you’ll get from them.
Steel yourself for war: They may not respond or they may act out old wounds and hidden resentments by saying something nasty. To stay safe and continue, adjust your warrior shield and only let in feedback that serves you for this exercise. Now is not the time to beat yourself up. Just tell yourself that an email is just bits and bytes, and is only meaningful if YOU MAKE IT MEANINGFUL.
Send them an email, introducing the context of the 21-Day Challenge, explain why you need their help, and ask them to answer three questions about you:
(a) What are my greatest qualities? How would you describe my energy, my way of being in the world?
(b) What are my greatest gifts? What do I do well? What could you see others wanting (or paying) me to do for them?
(c) How have I shown up for you, helped you, added benefit to your life?
Here’s a sample email:
“Hi Sally, It’s been a long time and I know we are way overdue for a catch-up, but I was hoping to ask your help completing an exercise in a course I’m taking. I’m doing the 21-Day Purpose Challenge, a free purpose discovery/refresh program (see details here: http://planetpurpose.org). This current exercise requires I reach out to people who know me well and ask them three short questions. Please answer these questions and reply to me via email by xxxx-day (two days from the day you send the email), as your reply will greatly inform my purpose discovery process in the course.
Thank you in advance for your quick turnaround and supporting me, as this exercise will help me understand more deeply my passions, gifts and qualities, so I can make more purpose-driven and rewarding choices that will create an awesome life for myself and for us all. Please don’t spend too much time on this. All I need's a few words or phrases for each. Feel free to call or email me if you have any questions. My three questions for you are:
Again, thank you so much for your generous time and insight!"
Once you start receiving replies, create a new page in your journal. Copy the phrases that resonate most and feel most truthful or inspiring into your journal. If you haven't heard from them in 48 hourse, please send a reminder email, gently telling them that you need their feedback for the next day’s exercise. Please review this feedback as you rewrite your purpose statement each morning.
