“Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu" (I am what I am because of who we all are.)
As Desmond Tutu says, Ubuntu “is the essence of being human. It speaks of the fact that my humanity is caught up and is inextricably bound up in yours. I am human because I belong. It speaks about wholeness, it speaks about compassion. A person with Ubuntu is welcoming, hospitable, warm, and generous, willing to share. Such people are open and available to others, willing to be vulnerable, affirming of others, do not feel threatened that others are able and good, for they have a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that they belong in a greater whole. They know that they are diminished when others are humiliated, diminished when others are oppressed, diminished when others are treated as if they were less than who they are. The quality of Ubuntu gives people resilience, enabling them to survive and emerge still human despite all efforts to dehumanize them.”

Ego Blueprint Exercise Part 4
Step One: Naming
It is now time to lovingly and playfully name each of your vital ego parts. Consider these questions as prompts. Who in your life, or in the world, is most critical? Who is most skeptical? Who cares most about other people’s opinions? Who is your most organized and well-planned friend? These are the questions to ask as you generate your personal name for each part.
Is there someone in your family that holds one of these energies? Once you’ve got someone in mind, come up with a fun name for them, one that feels interesting, like you actually want to hear what they have to say. Please err on the side of a silly and playful name, as it will lighten the conversation and make it more fun and generative to converse with them.
Step Two: Agreements
Now that each part is acknowledged, understood, and named, you are ready to talk to them, create some new agreements with them, and start building your life of purpose from the inside out. This process is lifelong; you will more deeply integrate your personal psyche around your soul and your life’s purpose. For each part, look at their “no fly” zone and create an agreement that honors their needs.
For example, your Critic may say: spend an hour each morning reading books that advance your purpose in the world. Your Skeptic may say: create and review your three-month plan each month with a trusted advisor. Your Image Consultant may say: develop your purpose statement and test it with three new people each week. Your Risk Manager may say: interview two people a month who are living in alignment with their purpose and ask them how they make their living and cover their expenses.
It is absolutely crucial that these agreements are specific and are transferred immediately to your calendar, using the SMART method (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant to your purpose, and Time-bound). If an agreement is vague, unmeasurable, impossible, unaligned, and not based in time, you won’t know really whether you kept it. If you write “Love yourself more fully,” how will you know you kept it? Yet, if you write, “Every morning while brushing my teeth, I will look myself in the eyes and tell myself internally all the things I love about who I am and what I am grateful for in my life,” you will know whether you did that or not.
It is 1. Specific: a discrete action - looking, saying; 2. Measurable: you will know if you’re looking yourself in the mirror and actually say those words or not; 3. Actionable: it is within your capacity to do it; 4. Relevant: it serves, and is aligned with, your purpose; and 5. Time-bound: it occurs during the three minutes of teeth-brushing.
Step Three: Honoring
Now that your psyche is starting to realign and you’re taking action in the present to meet the needs of each part, it’s time to say “Thank you!” for their life of service, and ask one final question: “What role do you want to play in my life of purpose?” How do you want your ego part to show up and help you in your purpose-aligned life? What can they do that will help you on your path? For example, your Critic might say, “I want to help you create new opportunities for personal development,” whereas your Image Consultant might say, “Be your personal purpose stylist,” and your Risk Manager might say, “Help you assess the risk of new partnerships,” and your Skeptic might say, “Help you take things slowly so you learn as much as you can.”
Well done! Your internal house is getting clean! This is a lifelong process. Tomorrow you are going to use this framework to blast through resistance to living your purpose. Keep up the great work!
