“We are all connected; To each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe atomically.” Neil degrasse Tyson
As with every morning in the 21-Day Challenge, please complete your Morning Purpose Ritual, and re-write your purpose statement.
Almost Likely Purposeless Future World Exercise
To take the awareness of purpose in your life even deeper and explore the consequences and impact on the world, on your relationships, on the environment and on all the people you care about, you’ll pick a point in the future, at least 10 years from now, to describe the impact on others of not living your life’s purpose. At this future point, you’ll assume you knew nothing of your life’s purpose, nor took any actions in the key areas of life to live in accordance with it, continuing to affect the world in a purposeless way - this is the “Almost Likely Purposeless Future World” you’ll meet.
The point of this exercise is to deepen your understanding of how living a life without purpose impacts the world outside of you, to broaden the context of your journey of purpose, make this journey about more than just your own happiness, fulfillment and success. Just imagine your life without purpose multiplying each day, deepening existing impacts, and perhaps even finding new ways to impact others in your life.
Each area of impact is going to be the four social key life areas (romance, family, community, career), PLUS the 10 issues that most break your heart from The Purpose Triangle Exercise.
For each area, you’ll write 3-5 key phrases describing how the lack of purpose will show up, e.g. in the environment in 15 years: the species extinction rate accelerates beyond the current level, and now we have only 10% of the world’s wildlife left (down from 50% in 2015), sea levels have risen 2 meters, 40% of humans are now climate change refugees, air quality is unbreatheable for 100 miles from each city center, cancer rates are rising, life spans have decreased from 80 to 50 years, rain and groundwater is undrinkable, food and fluids are exclusively available from Kraft, Coca-Cola and Monsanto, etc.
Again, you’ll need your notebook and a pen. Please make 2 columns with these column headings. Once you’re finished with each life area, draw a horizontal line and move down the page until you have each of the world areas completed.
The first step is to pick the point in the future - when you’ll imagine this purposeless self living.
Time in the future: ________________ (how many years from now, at least 10)
Key Area: | The Continued Impacts of My Purposeless Future Self on the World
Plus the issues from the Purpose Triangle Exercise, e.g. Homelessness, Poverty, Oppression, World Health, World Environment, My Culture, Economics, Politics
Thank you for pulling the sling shot back ALL of the way! You now know how important your purpose is, how lives depend on you living on purpose. It is no longer just the key to your own happiness, success and fulfillment, but now also the key to human survival and creating a world worth sustaining. This is a success, despite how you might be feeling about it right now. So, thank you for making it this far! You have completed one of the hardest parts of the Challenge.
As with yesterday’s exercise, you are likely feeling worse right now, so please exercise some self-care and move your body intentionally, e.g. some yoga or a long walk, with the intention to release what you have just done. This “Almost Likely Purposeless Future World” vision isn’t something you want to savor or keep with you, so please take this opportunity to, again, shake it out, and re-center with something more grounding, centering or inspiring, e.g. exercise, time with loved ones, nature, art, prayer, meditation, your purpose statement, a talk with a good friend or fellow purpose Challenger.
Stay tuned for tomorrow and get ready to rev up the purpose creation engine!
