“It is better to strive in one’s own dharma than to succeed in the dharma of another. ” – Krishna, 500 BCE, India
As with every morning in the 21-Day Challenge, please complete your Morning Purpose Ritual, and re-write your purpose statement.
Almost Likely Purposeless Future Self Exercise
To take the impact of purpose in your life (or the lack thereof) deeper and ground it in the felt experience of your life, you’ll pick a point in the future, at least 10 years from now to describe your life if you change nothing at all. At this future point, you’ll assume you knew nothing of your life’s purpose, nor took any actions in the key areas of life to life in accordance with it - this is the “Almost Likely Purposeless Future Self” you’ll meet.
The point of this exercise is to deepen your understanding of what living a life without purpose is costing you and will continue to cost you in the future, if you do nothing. Just imagine your life without purpose multiplying each day, deepening existing patterns, and perhaps even finding new ways to live without your purpose. For each key area of life, you’ll write 3-5 key phrases describing how the lack of purpose is showing up, e.g. for Career - still at same job, overeating during the day, 30 lbs. heavier, playing Candy Crush in the bathroom stalls to zone out, disconnecte/antagonistic with my co-workers, waiting to die/retirement, more angry, frustrated, numb and deflated by work, feeling like I wasted my life, etc.
Again, you’ll need your notebook and a pen. Please make 2 columns with these column headings. Once you’re finished with each life area, draw a horizontal line and move down the page until you have each of the 7 key life areas completed.
The first step is to pick the point in the future - when you’ll imagine this purposeless self living.
Time in the future: ________________ (how many years from now, at least 10)
Key Area: | The Experience of My Purposeless Future Self
Thank you for doing this unfun, but essential work. You have succeeded in pulling the sling shot back another third of the way. This is a success, despite how you might be feeling about it right now. You are likely feeling worse, so please exercise some self-care and move your body intentionally, e.g. some yoga or a long walk, with the intention to release what you have just done. This “Almost Likely Purposeless Future Self” vision isn’t something you want to savor or keep with you, so please take this opportunity to shake it out, and re-center with something more grounding, centering or inspiring, e.g. exercise, time with loved ones, nature, art, prayer, meditation, your purpose statement, a talk with a good friend or fellow purpose Challenger.
Just one more day to pull back the sling shot, then “Blast off!”
