“One who lives in harmony with oneself lives in harmony with the Universe.” Marcus Aurelius
As with every day of the Purpose Challenge, please perform your Morning Purpose Ritual.
Now that you have a solid understanding of your Critic, the arrows-in, negative self-talk, we’re going to meet the arrows-out, negative world-talk. This arrows-out talk does the same effect as the arrows-in Critic, it creates another reason not to live your life’s purpose, or to take any risks whatsoever. Today, you’ll meet the two-types of arrows-out voice, your Skeptic and Victim.
The Skeptic and Victim prevent you from danger (real or psychological), by telling you you can’t do things, by pointing it’s arrows outward at others, at the world, at institutions and isms, telling you, you cannot do this thing, because the world is a bad place full of untrustworthy (skeptic) or malicious (victim) people who will hurt you if you choose to live truthfully. It says you’ve been hurt before and you’ll get hurt again if you let anyone get close.
Now, a healthy Skeptic and Wounded Child (the healthy version of the Victim) says, “Be mindful in how you approach others, as purpose, courage and truth in any form can be threatening, as many people are only listening from their own fears (Critic, Skeptic, Victim), and instinctually react negatively to brilliance. Since I love you, I don’t want to see that happen. So let’s give some consideration to how we engage others with our purpose and meet them where they are at.”
An un-integrated Skeptic or Victim will say, “You cannot have a life of vitality, abundance and love, because others won’t let you have it, they will injure or diminish you at every turn, so don’t even try to find your purpose, don’t follow your dreams and stay small right where you are. Always obey me, because the world is full of bad people who want to hurt you. You need me to survive, and you need me to keep you small, stuck, inert.” See the difference there? The healthy Skeptic and Wounded Child guides you to act on your purpose from a place of compassion for others’ wounding and pragmatic wisdom, whereas the un-integrated Skeptic and Victim, just fills you with negative world-talk that keeps you from taking action towards the life you want.
So, you are going choose one of the two to interview. Which voice is most loud for you? Pick one to interview and then begin the process of discovery, understanding and integrating the voice into your life of purpose. As with every voice, this interview is in three parts: 1. Discovery, 2. Understanding, 3. Integration. You’ll ask your Skeptic/Victim each of these questions, directly, as though speaking to someone on the other side of the table.
Congratulations! You have advanced your journey to wholeness! Integrating your various parts, like your Skeptic and Wounded Child, is the key to removing limiting beliefs and negative world-talk. By continuing this integration process, you’ll have a fully cataloged and ordered psyche, a wide open space to live your life’s purpose, because you now have the tools to work with fear and resistance. This exercise is just the beginning of knowing and integrating your Skeptic and Wounded Child into a purposeful whole. It takes years, truly, but at least now you know who is responsible for the arrows-out, negative world-talk, and now you have the relationship to converse with your Skeptic and Wounded Child, to inquire and negotiate.
